Understanding Membrane Fouling in Electrically Driven Energy Conversion Devices

Positively charged (cetylpyridinium chloride), negatively (sodium dodecyl sulfate), and non-charged (polyethylene glycol) surfactants are used as potential foulant in reverse electrodialysis systems supplying seawater river freshwater. Fouling tendency of the foulants to ion-exchange membranes is investigated terms adsorption by electromigration, electrostatic attraction, macromolecule interaction systems. According theoretical prediction fouling tendency, streams could foul significantly. However, worst behavior observed when present streams. As a result zeta measurement, it found that Debye length decreases due higher ionic strength causes lower net effect. It finally results less electrodialysis.
